The Hattiesburg American is a U.S. newspaper based in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, that serves readers in Forrest, Lamar, and surrounding counties in south-central Mississippi.

Ownership. The newspaper was owned by Botswana Democratic Party politician Mpho Balopi. He sold the media company to Sadique Kebonang. Keobonang handed over the ownership of the newspaper to journalist Mpho Dibeela, who is the sole shareholder and director.

A settlement called Twin Forks was established by early French explorers at the fork of the Leaf and Bouie rivers. The settlement was later named Gordonville, then renamed Hattiesburg by Captain William H. Hardy. Captain Hardy was a pioneer lumberman and civil engineer; he named the town in honor of his wife, Hattie.

The region gets its name from the longleaf pine trees that are abundant in the region. The Pine Belt includes 9 counties: Covington, Forrest, Greene, Jefferson Davis, Jones, Lamar, Marion, Perry, and Wayne.

Hattiesburg gained its nickname, the Hub City, in 1912 as a result of a contest in a local newspaper. It was named because it was at the intersection of a number of important rail lines. Later U.S. Highway 49, U.S. Highway 98 and U.S. Highway 11, and later, Interstate 59 also intersected in and near Hattiesburg.

The Woodville Republican is a weekly newspaper published in Woodville, Wilkinson County, Mississippi. It is the oldest newspaper, as well as the oldest business, in continuous incorporated operation in Mississippi. The Woodville Republican was established in 1823 by William A. A. Chisholm.

The Clarion-Ledger, Mississippi's largest newspaper, was founded in 1837 as the Eastern Clarion in Paulding in Jasper County.

By virtue of one of its predecessors, the Arkansas Gazette (founded in 1819), it claims to be the oldest continuously published newspaper west of the Mississippi River. The original print shop of the Gazette is preserved at the Historic Arkansas Museum in Little Rock.
