Where should I start learning anatomy drawing? ›

When you first approach figure drawing, you need to start out with establishing the basic volumes of the figure using spheres, boxes, and cylinders. By simply beginning with these basic shapes and then building up the complexity as you go along, you will be able to make your drawing maintain its sense of dimension.

A figure drawing is a drawing of the human form in any of its various shapes and postures, using any of the drawing media. The term can also refer to the act of producing such a drawing. The degree of representation may range from highly detailed, anatomically correct renderings to loose and expressive sketches.

The human body is complex, so creating anatomically correct drawings isn't something you can learn in a day; it may take weeks of practice and studying reference drawings to truly understand the shape of each muscle and how they all connect.

Begin with armatures

Before you move on to drawing more detailed figures, you might want to begin by drawing armatures. Armatures are rather like glorified stick figures, and because they don't contain any details, drawing them helps you understand how to capture the basic forms of the body.

If your goals have to do with drawing from minimal reference or from imagination, and/or if you want to draw the human figure, Anatomy is a great place for you to begin.

To begin with, draw the head in the first segment. This is typically an oval shape; however, you can adjust the proportions to match whatever figure and body type you want to achieve. Starting with the head may feel unnatural, but it really helps you get the flow of the body, as you work your way down from head to toe.

Learning anatomy is not an easy task. The sheer volume of information which you need to learn in record time creates the perfect breeding ground for mistakes. This equates to wasted time, inefficient learning, and the constant need to start again.
